And things continue

No cycling today think I need a rest. though I did actually cycled another 2.43 miles to do a shift at the local food bank.

I'll continue to report my mileages to Khushi Feet Cycle to Kolkata to help complete the distance but for those who are interested here's some more photos from yesterday.

Ok I know technically it should be Week 10 Day one but..........

I have to admit to having lost a week which should have been between weeks 3 and 4 on this blog.  This week has actualy been week 10
BUT

I HAVE DONE IT!!!

Having just cycled 21.8 miles my grand total is 330.75 miles yes that's more than the 5% of the distance to Kolkata that I had aimed to do. {not by much admittedly}

Exactly ten weeks after the launch which means I have cycled an average of 33.075 miles a week or 4.72 miles a day. If you subtract the two weeks that I was laid up with the flu its an average of 41.344 per week or 5.91 a day. 

Now today's ride took me out past Brogdale round past Throwley down the dreaded Haywards Hill and on to Eastling. Eastling church was unlocked so I left my bike guarded by some young pigs who thought I had come to feed them and had  a look round.

Don't remember ever having visited Eastling before but this monument seemed strangely familiar 

 From Eastling I droped down into Newnham then turned south to Doddington up the steep Church Hill I stopped to look at the little church with a white wooden tower.

Friday must be Church open day as I managed to gain access and photos from inside on another day.
From here I cycled through Lynstead out to Teynham then on to Teynham street where the church was also open

 From here I followed national cycle path 1 which took me through Ludenham, didn't call at the butchers today then to Oare and eventually Faversham.

So with the sun shining and my fluorescent T-Shirt on I set out to do 12.22 miles one third of the total remaining last night. I started with my usual loop round Sandbanks and back via the creek, I then cut into Abbey Street out through Davington and found myself at the Oare Nature Reserve. Looking out across the Swale I noticed a traditional sailing boat motoring up the river {technical its not a river but} I thought this was interesting having photographed the Oyster Yawl yesterday so is this a Yawl or a Smack or something else???

Sorry about the quality I had left my new camera at home and this is digital zoom on my old cannon.
My research would say something else as apparently both a yawl and a smack have two masts so what is she? 

At Dans Dock I swung inland and up past the Gun Cotton Works Gate,

 then out to Ludenham where I bought some sausages from the butcher in the farm yard next to the church. Cycled back to Ludenham village and then headed toward Sittingbourne this took me further out than I expected so on reaching Lower Road I turn back toward Faversham then back through Davington again and home.

Ok so I missed day five it was very wet yesterday so I did not go out for a ride but today I cycled to Whitstable and back giving me 17.54 miles dry but overcast when  left the weather decided that I should get wet again.

Saw this old favourite on the sea front had to take a snap couldn't get to the front of it because of a family reading the information board may be another time

Oyster Yawl Favourite

The Favourite is the last Oyster Yawl to remain in Whitstable she was built in 1890, when dredging for oysters was an important industry in Whitstable.

Favourite is the only Oyster Yawl permanently in the town, although several other yawls are still sailing elsewhere. In public ownership, she was rebuilt in 2006 using traditional materials and methods.

The Old Neptune

The Old Neptune is probably the closest to the sea of any pub in Whitstable possible any where in Kent

The Old Neptune must be great on a sunny afternoon with all those benches on the beach. I decided to go home via Island Wall and along the seawall unfortunately the seawall does not go all the way to Seasalter so I had to carry the bike up the steps to Joy Lane. Then cycle home under the lea of the sea wall where it started to rain. Back via my standard route of Sandbanks Lane and the creek where it didn't seem to have rained all day!!!

Today I decided to try the  circular cycle route on the Isle of Thanet I drove to Reculver and set out from there much of the route is on sea walls and off road cycle ways. Margate was full of motorbikes and bikers and very wet rain!!

Found this its know as Neptune's Tower a folly built in the late 1700's

Ok as promised I went back out to St Marys Norton to even with the over cast some time showery weather its a lovely setting.

Ok so this first photo was taken yesterday but I forgot to point out my bike lent agianst the hedge is is just to prove that i am cycling to these locations in case you thought otherwise!

Sorry I forgot to take a note book with me so don't have any information on the windows but they all appear to be Victorian. Apart from the photos above all the windows in the church are as below

There are some large memorial tablets in the church almost all of people connected with Norton Court which is next door to the church. This one was rather grand it was only after I took it that I realised it is in fact two memorials, the top to a former Rector of Eastling, and adjoining parish, he died age 35 and was the son of the owner of Norton Court who just happened to be MP for Canterbury. Looking at some of the other memorials it appears that this family where not very lucky with at least three of there children dieing in their late 20 early thirties before both parents.

The lower memorial was for Benjamin Godfrey dyed 13th march 1704 aged 72 he also lived at Norton Court having married Mary Baptist Piggott who inherited the property on her fathers death. At the bottom of the tablet is in incomplete inscription it reads:

Who died May 7th 1730 being ascension day

I assume this was Benjamin's wife though she must have been some years younger than him to die 26 years latter or be well in her eighties which was unusual in the early 1700's. I can only assume no one could tell the stone mason the full inscription because as you see it was never finished properly.

I cycled home via Throwley church more of that another day this route included the dreaded Hempstaed Hill any one who has cycled the faversham charities bike ride will know what I mean, but I managed it without getting of and got home in one piece total 16.98 miles.
