Friday/Saturday

My foot was still playing up on Friday so we went for a short walk around Stavely, nice to see the road bridge that was swept away by Storm Desmond in 2015 has now been replaced, it wasn't there last October. The walk was a gentle stroll along the river Kent to the weir shown below.

Just under where Tom is standing there is evidence of an old mill race that must have provided power to the Paper Mill now run by Kentmere, not that that name would mean anything to many other than my father and older brother!

Back in Stavely Village we stopped at Wilf's for lunch

Where we sat out on the deck has been built over the mill race for Stavely Turning Mill, now the cafe.

We were visited by a nice looking Goosander 

Saturday I felt better so we decided to go to Haverthwaite and have a walk along the River Leven and find lunch out. Parking by the Anglers Arms we set off up what had many years ago been part of the A590 but now ended in a cow field! Part way along the road we found these unusual creatures!

After a number of woodlands and fields and a marsh were all of us bar Sammy got we feet, we ended up at the Leven estuary  

The whole day was a bit grey as the photos show and we had the occasional drizzle but even this and the we feet didn't dampen our spirits. We decided to lunch at the Lakeside and Haverthwaite Railway. Sadly I missed the train that came and left whilst we were eating.

Thursday

Well it had to happen woke this morning and was hardly able to walk my right foot was swollen and painful. Steve and I decided to meet up with Julie as she would be in Kendal at lunch time so little or no walking to be done. We met at the waterside Cafe Bistro a lovely little Vegetarian/Vegan restaurant on the banks of the River Kent, the river from which Kendal.

On Saturday thanks to storm Callum the bridge down stream from here looked like this, with just inches away from over topping the river bank what a difference a few days makes!

Two more days in the Lakes

Tuesday was wet thought that didn't stop us going for a walk around Windermere the town as well as the lake.
Because it was so wet there are not many photographs. Storm Callum had raise the level of Windermere such that the jetties that we normally lunch by were underwater and our usual bench on this route was inaccessible due to the high water level.
As we left the mere we climbed up through a beech wood  an opportunity for some photos.

Wednesday was overcast but dry so we headed of to Tarn Hows, on arriving we were unable to park so moved on through Coniston past Brantwood House, the former home of John Ruskin, to a car park by the lake giving a walk through part of Grisdale Forest. This involved some steep climbs but gave some nice views across to Coniston village and an opportunity to do some bird watching.

Wednesdays fungi

The Lakes again

Its October so I must be in the Lake District!
Arrived on Saturday in pouring rain courtesy of storm Callum. 
Sunday was a quiet day with the family Monday as I was still recovering from damaging my ankle in London we looked for a gentle walk, actually one of my favourites, around Rydal Water with a stop for tea at Rydal Hall a conference centre run by the Diocese of Carlisle which has a lovely tea shop sat alongside a stream.

After tea we took the old 'Coffin Trail' back to 'White Moss' were we had parked the car, which gave us some lovely views of the autumn colour.
