Norwich part 1 Cathedral

So last weekend I spent some time in Norwich so here are some photos of what I saw. 
First part is The Cathedral, there are two main gates into the precincts of the Cathedral The Ethelbert Gate and The Erpingham Gate.

As you enter the Ethelbert Gate you arrive in the Upper Green with this veiw of the Cathedral

Turn left and walk toward the building to get this veiw of the Norwich School then the front of the Nave

Turn round and you see The Erpingham Gate sadly I forgot to get a photo of the outside

Peace Globe each candle is a prayer for peace

The guide book says that Norwich Cathedral has the largest collection of ceiling bosses in any Cathedral in the country

 To the left of the Quire Screen there is a passageway that used to be very dark and uninviting until this set of three windows were installed the represent the Trinity

The box halfway up on the left is the nest box for the local Peregrine Falcons

In the centre of the cloister there is a Labyrinth here are two shots of it

 

To the left of the West Door

The Hostry (visitors entrance) and the Refectory (cafe) are held in a modern building built within the walls of the old monastery but without touching them. A wonderful bit of design.

High Dam and more

We started the day with a grey morning and fairy dust in the air. We set of to visit High Dam above Finsthwaite. 
We parked alongside the railway at Newby Bridge starting walking up Waterside Knott

On top of Waterside Knott there is a monument called Finsthwaite Tower

A memorial commemorating naval victories in the 1700 can you imagine the conversation between the builder and the person commissioning it. 
'So you want to build a memorial to commemorating Naval Victories'
'Yes'
'Um can you see the sea from the top' 
'No but there is a lovely view up Windermere!' 

The woodland is managed by The Woodlands Trust and they are trying to bring back native woodland

 The woodland was originally planted to support the nearby Stott Park Bobbin Mill the following two installations commemorate this  

 At the bottom of the hill is the welcome sign

But we approached it from this side

I thought it was fun

Across the field was the village of Finsthwaite

From Finsthwaite we worked our way up hill to High Dam

On the way back to the car the clouds lifted from the fells in the north to reveal the snow

 The river Leven has a very attractive wear despite the snow filled air

We lunched in The Crown in High Newton then  Mark asked if we could go to Gummers Howe to get some views of the higher fells. As we arrived the clouds cleared from the Coniston Fells showing off today's sugar coating.

And to end the day we where treated to this in Kendal!!!
